Octopus Energy Tariffs Explained
A plain-English guide to every Octopus Energy plan. Find the right one for your home.
Flexible Octopus (Variable)
This is Octopus’s standard variable tariff. Your rates follow the Ofgem price cap, which is reviewed quarterly. When the cap drops, your rates drop automatically. When it rises, you’re protected by the cap ceiling.
Best for: Households who want simplicity and don’t mind rates changing each quarter.
Octopus 12-Month Fixed
Locks in your unit rate and standing charge for 12 months. Octopus fixed tariffs are typically priced below the Ofgem cap and — unusually — most come with no exit fees, so you can leave if a better deal appears.
Best for: Anyone who wants price certainty and to protect against potential future increases.
Get a Quote on Fixed Rates →Intelligent Octopus Go
The UK’s most popular EV tariff. It works with compatible smart chargers and vehicles to automatically schedule charging during the cheapest overnight window. From April 2026, the smart charging rate dropped significantly — well below 10p per kWh in most regions.
You also get 6 hours of discounted energy for your whole home overnight, not just EV charging.
Requires: Smart meter + compatible EV charger or vehicle.
Best for: Electric vehicle owners who charge at home.
Octopus Go
A simpler EV tariff with a fixed 5-hour off-peak window (00:30–05:30) at a reduced rate. No app-based smart scheduling — just set your car or charger timer and go.
Requires: Smart meter.
Best for: EV owners who prefer a straightforward setup without app integration.
Agile Octopus
A half-hourly tariff where your rate changes every 30 minutes based on wholesale prices. Rates can go very low during off-peak periods (sometimes even negative, meaning you’re paid to use electricity). There’s a cap of 100p/kWh to protect against extreme peaks.
Requires: Smart meter with half-hourly data.
Best for: Tech-savvy households who can shift usage to cheaper periods. Particularly effective with home batteries.
Octopus Tracker
Your rate changes daily, tracking the wholesale energy market. It’s transparent — you can see exactly what drives your costs. Generally cheaper than the cap over time, but with more day-to-day variation than a fixed tariff.
Best for: People who want transparency and are comfortable with daily rate changes.
Cosy Octopus
Designed specifically for heat pump owners. Offers three windows of cheaper electricity throughout the day (early morning, afternoon, and evening), aligning with when heat pumps typically run hardest.
Requires: Heat pump + smart meter.
Best for: Homes with air-source or ground-source heat pumps.
Octopus Flux
A tariff for homes with solar panels and battery storage. It offers different import and export rates throughout the day, rewarding you for storing solar energy and exporting it when the grid needs it most.
Best for: Homes with solar panel and battery setups.
