Octopus Energy Referral FAQ

Everything you need to know about switching and claiming your credit.

General Questions

How does the Octopus Energy referral code work?

When you click our referral link and complete your switch to Octopus Energy, £50 credit is automatically added to your new account. The referral is tracked through the link itself — you don’t need to enter a code manually. The credit typically appears within 2–4 weeks after your switch completes and your first Direct Debit payment is taken.

Is this referral link still working?

Yes. Our referral link is active and verified as of March 2026. The Octopus Energy refer-a-friend programme has been running continuously since 2023. We check and confirm the link is working regularly.

Do I need to enter a referral code manually?

No. By clicking our referral link, the code is automatically applied during sign-up. Just complete the registration and you’ll receive your credit once the switch finalises. If you’re signing up by phone, you can quote the referral code warm-ant-502 to the agent.

Switching Questions

How long does the switch take?

Switching to Octopus Energy typically takes around 5 working days under Ofgem’s Faster Switching rules, though it often completes in just 3 days. Octopus handles the entire process — they’ll contact your old supplier on your behalf.

Will I lose my gas or electricity supply during the switch?

No. Your energy supply is continuous throughout the switch. The same physical infrastructure delivers your gas and electricity — only the billing company changes. You won’t notice any interruption.

Do I need to contact my current energy supplier?

No. When you switch to Octopus, they handle all communication with your current supplier. You don’t need to call anyone or give notice.

What if I’m currently in a fixed-term contract?

Check whether your current tariff has exit fees — these are typically £30–£60 per fuel. Compare any exit fee against the annual saving you’d make by switching. In most cases, the saving significantly exceeds any exit penalty. Note that most Octopus fixed tariffs have no exit fees, so once you’re with them you have full flexibility.

Credit & Eligibility

When will I receive my £50 credit?

The £50 credit is typically added to your Octopus account within 2–4 weeks after your switch completes and your first Direct Debit payment has been successfully taken. You’ll be able to see it in your account balance history.

Can I use this referral if I’m already with Octopus?

The referral credit is for new customers switching to Octopus Energy. If you’re already a customer, you’ll have your own referral link in your Octopus account dashboard. Share it with friends and family, and you’ll both earn £50 credit for each successful switch.

Do business customers get a referral bonus?

Yes. Business customers receive £75 credit when switching to Octopus Energy through a referral, compared to £50 for residential customers. The sign-up process is slightly different — you’ll need to go through the Octopus business page.

Does the referral credit change my tariff rates?

No. The referral link gives you account credit — it doesn’t affect your unit rates or standing charges in any way. You get exactly the same tariff as any other customer, plus the bonus credit on top.

Pricing & Tariffs

Is Octopus Energy actually cheaper than my current supplier?

Octopus consistently offers fixed tariffs priced below the Ofgem price cap, and they’re the only large supplier to have never charged the full cap. The best way to check is to click our referral link — you can get a no-obligation quote by entering your postcode and see exactly what you’d pay.

What happened with the April 2026 price cap?

The Ofgem price cap dropped by around 7% from April 2026, following the government’s decision to remove certain policy costs from energy bills. The cap for a typical dual-fuel household is now £1,641 per year. Octopus has passed these savings on to all customers, including those on fixed tariffs.

Should I fix my energy tariff or stay on variable?

It depends on your priorities. Fixed tariffs give you price certainty for 12 months and protect against potential future rises. Variable tariffs follow the Ofgem cap and adjust each quarter. Since most Octopus fixed tariffs have no exit fees, fixing carries minimal risk — you can always switch to variable later if rates drop further.
