How to Switch to Octopus Energy

Step 2: Enter Your Postcode

On the Octopus site, you’ll be asked for your postcode. This lets them calculate an accurate quote for your home based on your area’s energy rates.

Step 3: Review Your Quote

Octopus will show you an estimated monthly cost. For the most accurate quote, have a recent energy bill handy so you can enter your actual annual kWh usage. If you don’t have one, the estimated usage based on your home size works fine.

There’s no obligation at this point — you can see the quote and decide whether to proceed.

Step 4: Sign Up

Happy with the quote? Complete the sign-up form with your details. You’ll need your name, address, and bank details for the Direct Debit.

Octopus will then handle everything with your current supplier. You don’t need to contact your old provider — they’ll be notified automatically.

Step 5: Sit Back and Save

Your switch typically completes within 5 working days. Once your first Direct Debit payment is taken, the £50 referral credit will be added to your Octopus account. This usually happens within 2–4 weeks.

Things Worth Knowing

No disruption to your supply. Your gas and electricity continue as normal throughout the switch. The same physical infrastructure delivers your energy — only the billing company changes.

No exit fees on most Octopus tariffs. Octopus typically doesn’t charge exit fees on their fixed tariffs, giving you flexibility to change plans later if needed.

Smart meter installation. If you don’t already have a smart meter, Octopus can install one free of charge. It’s not required to switch, but it does unlock access to their best tariffs like Intelligent Octopus Go and Agile Octopus.
